Luer Lock vs Toomey Cannula: Which Hub Fits Your Syringe

The five hub fittings we make liposuction and fat grafting cannulas in, what each one connects to, the sizes in each line, and the adapters that join them.

The hub is the end of the cannula that connects to a syringe or a handle, and it has to match what you connect it to. A Luer lock hub twists onto a Luer lock syringe and suits small volume harvesting and injection. A Toomey 60cc hub fits the wide tip of a 60 mL Toomey syringe and suits larger volume harvesting. Thread fitting cannulas screw into a handle, and fixed handle cannulas have the handle built on. Choose the hub from the syringe or handle you already use, then choose the tip and size.

Where does the Luer fitting come from?

The name comes from the Lüer family, whose instrument firm worked in Paris in the nineteenth century. Hermann Wülfing Lüer patented the tapered fitting in 1894. It is a simple cone with a 6 percent taper, so a tip pushed into a matching socket seals by friction. In 1898 Maxwell Becton and Fairleigh Dickinson bought the North American rights to the Lüer syringe, and Dickinson later patented the locking version, where a collar twists the two parts together so they cannot pull apart. That locking design is what "Luer lock" means today. The history of the Luer taper and MDDI's account of its place in medical history cover both steps. Small bore connectors for hypodermic use are now standardised in ISO 80369-7.

The Toomey tip is older catheter tip practice adapted to a large syringe: a wide, straight, blunt tip on a 60 mL barrel, widely sold for irrigation. We could not find a reliable source for who the name honours, so we do not repeat the stories.

When should you pick Luer lock and when Toomey?

  • Luer lock if you work with 10 mL or 20 mL Luer lock syringes, need fine diameters, down to 0.7 mm injecting cannulas, or move fat from syringe to syringe. The twist lock stops the cannula slipping off under suction.
  • Toomey 60cc if you harvest by syringe and want more volume per pass. The larger syringe and wider hub take 2.5 to 6 mm cannulas, longer shafts to 35 cm.
  • Both on the same tray is common: harvest through a Toomey, then process and inject through Luer lock. Our 60cc Toomey hub for Luer lock cannulas lets one cannula work with either syringe.

What do we check when we make them?

A cannula hub has to seal. We check that each hub seats fully on its matching syringe or handle and does not rock, that the bore is clear from the port to the hub, and that the ports are deburred inside and out. Cannulas are surgical grade stainless steel, hand finished in Sialkot, and autoclavable. We do not mix Luer lock and Super Luer Lock parts, and we suggest you do not either without trying the fit first.

How should cannulas be cleaned?

Flush the bore straight after use, before fat and fluid dry inside it, then brush the bore with a cannula brush of the right diameter and clean the ports. A lumen that looks clean from outside can still hold residue, so flush until the water runs clear. Never leave cannulas in saline. Our instrument care guide gives the full routine, and the CDC guidance on cleaning instruments before sterilization explains why cleaning comes first.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Luer lock cannula fit a Toomey syringe?

Not directly. The Toomey tip is much wider than a Luer tip. Use a 60cc Toomey hub adapter for Luer lock cannulas.

Is Super Luer Lock the same as Luer lock?

We make them as two separate lines with their own hubs. Try the fit with your syringes or handles before mixing them, or ask us to check.

What diameter cannula do I need for fat grafting to the face?

Fine diameters, typically 2 mm or less, are used for facial work. Our Luer lock injecting cannulas start at 0.7 mm. The surgeon decides the size for the case.

Can liposuction cannulas be autoclaved?

Ours can. Flush and brush the bore first, because steam cannot sterilise what is still inside the lumen.

Match the hub, then the tip

Once you know your hub, read our guide to cannula tip types to choose the tip. For a full set in one fitting, send us your list and we will send you a quote.
