What an Osteotome Does

An osteotome is a chisel-like surgical instrument, struck with a mallet, used to make controlled cuts through bone — distinct from a rongeur, which bites and removes bone piece by piece, or a rasp, which files bone smooth. In rhinoplasty, osteotomes are used to perform controlled lateral and medial osteotomies of the nasal bones, allowing the surgeon to narrow, straighten, or reposition the bony nasal pyramid as part of reshaping the nose's overall structure.

Straight and Curved Configurations

The straight osteotome is used for direct linear cuts, most commonly along the medial or lateral osteotomy lines. The curved-left and curved-right versions allow the surgeon to follow the natural curvature of the lateral nasal wall on each respective side, producing a cut that follows the bone's contour more closely than a straight blade could manage, which is particularly important for a clean, predictable lateral osteotomy.
