Materials & Grades

Speculums are stainless steel wire or solid blade, electro-polished; selected patterns are available in titanium (e.g. Wright). Adjustable models use a locking screw or nut to hold the aperture.

Buying Guide

Choosing a lid speculum: • Approach — nasal-approach speculums keep the frame away from a temporal incision, and vice versa. • Blade — open wire blades allow lashes to be tucked; solid or closed blades isolate lashes and meibomian glands more completely. • Fixed vs adjustable — Barraquer wire speculums are fast and light; Lieberman, Cook and Williams locking speculums hold a set aperture for longer cases. • Patient size — infant and premature Barraquer, Alphonso and Lieberman versions are available. • Laser platforms — femtosecond speculums are shaped to clear the patient interface.

Category FAQ

What is the difference between nasal and temporal approach speculums?

The frame sits on the opposite side from the surgeon's approach, so a temporal-approach speculum leaves the temporal side clear for a temporal incision and a nasal-approach speculum leaves the nasal side clear.

Do you make infant eye speculums?

Yes — infant and premature infant versions of the Barraquer, Alphonso, Lieberman and Kratz-Barraquer speculums are available.
