The Carlin Periosteal Elevator (S27-140-15) is a 15.5cm hand instrument used to lift and separate the periosteum — the fibrous membrane covering bone — from the underlying bone surface, a foundational step in maxillofacial and orthognathic surgery whenever bone needs to be exposed for osteotomy, plating, or grafting.

What a Periosteal Elevator Does

Before a surgeon can cut, plate, or graft bone, the periosteum covering it must be carefully lifted and pushed aside without tearing, since the periosteum carries much of the blood supply to the underlying bone and preserving it supports healing. A periosteal elevator has a smooth, typically flat or slightly curved working edge specifically designed to separate this membrane from bone cleanly, without gouging the bone surface or unnecessarily traumatizing the periosteum itself.

At 15.5cm, the Carlin elevator is sized for a comfortable working grip across a range of maxillofacial exposure needs, with a working edge shaped to slide cleanly along the bone-periosteum interface.
