What a Davis-Boyle Mouth Gag Does

A mouth gag holds the mouth open and the tongue depressed simultaneously, giving the surgeon hands-free, stable access to the oral cavity and oropharynx — standard equipment for tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and other transoral procedures. The Davis-Boyle design uses a self-retaining frame with an interchangeable blade that both depresses the tongue and, on four of the five included blades, incorporates a fixed suction channel to clear blood and secretions directly through the blade during the procedure.

Five Blade Sizes

The graduated blade sizes, from 30x20mm up to 110x28mm, let the surgeon match blade size to patient anatomy — smaller blades for pediatric cases, larger blades for adult anatomy — without needing separate complete gag systems for each patient size. The suction-tube blades handle routine fluid management directly through the gag; the smallest, non-suction blade is typically used where the suction feature isn't needed or where minimal bulk is preferred.
