Obwegeser Nasal Septum Osteotome, 18.5cm — Overview

The Obwegeser Nasal Septum Osteotome (S27-150-00 family) is an 18.5cm osteotome available in 4.0mm, 6.0mm, and 8.0mm widths, used specifically to separate the nasal septum from the maxilla during Le Fort I osteotomy, a necessary step since the septum's bony and cartilaginous connection to the maxilla must be released before the maxilla can be mobilized.

Why the Septum Must Be Released

During Le Fort I osteotomy, the maxilla is connected not only to the surrounding facial skeleton but also to the nasal septum along the midline. This connection must be carefully released as part of the osteotomy sequence, using an instrument specifically shaped to separate this connection without causing unnecessary septal trauma, before the maxillary mobilizer can complete the down-fracture.

The 4.0mm, 6.0mm, and 8.0mm widths let the surgeon match the instrument to the specific septal anatomy and the extent of separation needed.
