Obwegeser Splitting Osteotome, 21.5cm — Overview

The Obwegeser Splitting Osteotome (S27-159-00 family) is a 21.5cm osteotome available in 7.0mm and 10mm widths, used to perform the sagittal splitting cut in sagittal split ramus osteotomy, the procedure through which the mandible is divided along its length to allow controlled repositioning.

The Sagittal Split Cut

Sagittal split ramus osteotomy divides the mandible along a horizontal plane through the ramus and body, separating it into a proximal (condylar) segment and a distal (tooth-bearing) segment that can then be repositioned relative to each other. This splitting osteotome is specifically designed for making this precise, controlled cut, distinct from the general Obwegeser Blade Osteotome used for the initial cortical cuts.

Two Widths

The 7.0mm width suits more conservative, controlled splitting; the 10mm width is used where a broader splitting cut is preferred.

Clinical Use

This osteotome is used specifically in sagittal split ramus osteotomy for the splitting step of the procedure, a defining component of the Obwegeser surgical technique.

Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel and hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan, with a hardened, precisely ground cutting edge at each width.

Sterilization and Care

Fully autoclavable in both widths. The cutting edge should be inspected before each use for nicks or dulling.
