About this instrument

Alphonso Infant Lid Speculum — Overview

The Alphonso Infant Lid Speculum (SA-790-85) is a self-retaining pediatric eyelid retractor distinguished by an asymmetric blade pair — one 5mm blade and one 7mm blade — on a compact 4.5cm frame with a 27mm spread and an integrated finger grip. It is used across infant and pediatric ophthalmic procedures where the surgeon wants two different contact widths on the upper and lower lid rather than a matched pair.

Why Two Different Blade Widths

Most self-retaining speculums use identical blades on both arms, but the upper and lower eyelid don't always need the same retraction profile. The upper lid, which typically bears more of the surgical exposure burden and moves through a wider excursion during levator-related manipulation, can benefit from the wider 7mm blade for more secure, distributed contact, while the narrower 5mm blade on the lower arm reduces unnecessary pressure on the thinner lower lid tissue. This asymmetric design gives the surgeon that differentiated contact without needing to select or swap components mid-case.

Finger Grip and Handling

The integrated finger grip is a practical addition for insertion and removal: rather than pinching the spring body directly, the surgeon or assistant has a dedicated grip surface, which is particularly useful in infant cases where fine control during placement matters and where a slipping grip on a small instrument is more consequential than on a larger adult speculum.

Clinical Use

This speculum is used in infant and young pediatric ophthalmic surgery — congenital cataract extraction, examination under anesthesia, and other anterior segment procedures — where the surgeon wants the specific asymmetric blade configuration this design offers, as an alternative to symmetric infant specula like the standard Barraquer infant models.

Material and Construction

Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel and hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan, with spring tension calibrated for infant-scale retraction, and the compact 4.5cm overall length keeping the instrument's footprint appropriately small for the pediatric orbit.

Sterilization and Care

Fully autoclavable and intended for repeated reuse. As with all infant-scale specula, pre-use inspection for bent arms, blade deformation, or reduced spring tension is standard practice given how sensitive retraction reliability is to small tolerances at this size.
