Barraquer Infant Lid Speculum Closed Wire Blade
$12.00

The Barraquer Lid Speculum with a closed blade, nasal approach (SA-790-bs3) is a flat, solid-blade variant offered in a finer size range — 8mm, 9mm, 11mm, and 14mm — than the standard solid-blade speculum, making it well suited to procedures needing more precise, incremental blade sizing than the wider 6/10/15/20mm range provides. It is available in stainless steel or titanium.
Where the standard solid-blade speculum jumps from 6mm to 10mm to 15mm to 20mm, this closed-blade series fills in the space between the smallest and mid-range sizes with 8mm, 9mm, 11mm, and 14mm options. That finer graduation is useful for surgeons who prefer to match blade width as closely as possible to the individual patient's palpebral fissure rather than rounding up or down to the nearest size in a coarser range — particularly relevant in adult patients with a narrower-than-average fissure, or in pediatric cases just above infant size, where a 10mm blade may be a poor fit but a 15mm range's next-smallest option (6mm) would be too small.
“Closed” describes the blade profile: a continuous, smooth edge without an open hook or notch, reducing the risk of catching tissue or drape material during placement, adjustment, or removal. Combined with the solid (rather than wire) construction, the blade provides firm, stable retraction along a flat contact line with the lid margin, suited to procedures requiring consistent, unwavering exposure.
The arm and blade angle are set so the instrument body sits temporally, keeping the nasal quadrant clear for a second instrument or cannula — the standard configuration for most anterior segment and cataract procedures where the surgeon's working instruments approach from the nasal side.
Stainless steel provides a durable, cost-effective option for general theatre use; titanium offers a lighter, non-magnetic alternative with enhanced long-term corrosion resistance, suited to practices that prioritize instrument longevity or want to reduce hand fatigue on long operating lists.
Placement follows standard self-retaining speculum technique: the surgeon retracts the lids, positions the blades just inside the lid margins, and releases so spring tension in the arms maintains exposure hands-free. The instrument is fully autoclavable and should be inspected before each use for blade deformation, edge damage, or reduced spring tension, cleaned promptly after use, and stored to protect the blade edges from nicks.
The Closed Blade Nasal Approach range, SKU SA-790-bs3, is available across 8mm, 9mm, 11mm, and 14mm blade sizes in stainless steel or titanium, hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan. Scatter Instruments supplies this range to hospitals, surgery centers, and distributors internationally, with bulk pricing and OEM or private-label branding available on request.
