Barraquer Infant Lid Speculum Closed Wire Blade
$12.00

The Barraquer Lid Speculum with a solid blade, temporal approach (SA-794-bs) is the mirror-configuration counterpart to the nasal-approach solid blade speculum: the same rigid, machined-blade retraction design, but with the arms and blade angle arranged so the speculum body sits toward the nasal side, leaving the temporal quadrant of the orbit clear. It is supplied in the same four blade sizes — 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, and 20mm — in stainless steel or titanium.
Surgical approach direction varies by procedure, surgeon handedness, and which side of the eye a second instrument needs to reach. Temporal cataract incisions, certain strabismus approaches, and procedures where the assistant or a second instrument works from the temporal side all benefit from a speculum body positioned out of that pathway. Facilities doing high volumes of cataract surgery frequently stock both nasal- and temporal-approach speculums side by side, selecting per case based on incision site and surgeon preference rather than committing to a single configuration.
Construction is identical to the nasal-approach version in every respect except blade-arm orientation: solid machined blades (rather than wire loops) for firm, stable retraction; a spring-tensioned, self-retaining body; and the same 6mm (pediatric/narrow fissure), 10mm (general adult), 15mm (oculoplastic/wider exposure), and 20mm (maximal exposure) size options. Choosing between stainless steel and titanium follows the same trade-off as the nasal version — stainless steel for cost-effective, high-volume use; titanium for reduced weight, non-magnetic properties, and extended corrosion resistance.
Placement technique mirrors any self-retaining Barraquer speculum: the surgeon retracts the lids, positions the blades just inside the upper and lower lid margins, and releases the arms so spring tension maintains exposure without requiring an assistant to hold the instrument. Because the body sits nasally, instruments approaching from the temporal side — commonly the phaco handpiece in temporal-incision cataract surgery — have a clear, unobstructed path, reducing the risk of the retractor interfering with instrument movement mid-procedure.
The instrument is fully autoclavable in both material options. As with all solid-blade Barraquer specula, routine pre-use inspection for arm deformation, blade edge damage, or reduced spring tension is standard, along with prompt post-case cleaning and careful tray storage to protect the blade surfaces from nicking against other instruments.
The full Solid Blade Temporal Approach range is available in stainless steel and titanium across all four blade sizes, hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan to the same surgical-grade tolerances as the nasal-approach version. Scatter Instruments supplies this range internationally to hospitals, surgery centers, and distributors, with bulk pricing and OEM or private-label branding available on request.
