Barraquer Infant Lid Speculum Closed Wire Blade
$12.00

The Barraquer Lid Speculum with a solid blade, nasal approach (SA-790-bs) is a self-retaining eyelid retractor built around a single machined blade on each arm rather than a wire loop, giving firmer and more stable retraction under sustained load. It is supplied in four blade sizes — 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, and 20mm — in either stainless steel or titanium, and is one of the most commonly used general-purpose specula in adult ophthalmic surgery.
The nasal-approach designation refers to how the arms and blades are angled: the speculum body sits toward the temporal side of the eye, leaving the nasal quadrant clear. That clearance matters whenever a second instrument — an irrigation cannula, a phaco probe, a second speculum, or the surgical microscope itself — needs unobstructed access from the nasal side, which is the standard working direction in most anterior segment and cataract procedures.
The 6mm blade is used for pediatric cases and adults with a narrow palpebral fissure; 10mm is the general-purpose adult size used in routine cataract and anterior segment work; 15mm is chosen for oculoplastic and reconstructive procedures needing wider exposure; 20mm is reserved for larger orbits or procedures requiring maximal working room. Stocking the full range lets a facility match blade size to the individual patient rather than compromising exposure with an ill-fitting instrument.
Stainless steel is heavier, rigid, and the traditional lower-cost choice for high-volume general theatres. Titanium is roughly 40% lighter, non-magnetic, and offers superior long-term corrosion resistance, making it preferred where MRI-adjacent handling matters, where instrument longevity is prioritized, or where surgeons doing long operating lists want to reduce hand fatigue. The lighter weight can also translate into a more stable, less fatiguing grip for the assistant during insertion and adjustment.
The surgeon manually retracts the upper and lower lids, positions the solid blades just inside the lid margins, and releases so the spring tension of the body holds the retraction in place hands-free. The solid blade distributes pressure evenly along its flat contact line with the lid, which many surgeons find more stable than a wire loop during longer procedures, and less prone to slipping. Removal is by gently squeezing the arms together and lifting the blades clear.
Both material versions are autoclavable and built for repeated reuse. Instruments should be inspected before use for bent arms, blade nicks, or reduced spring tension, cleaned promptly after each case, and stored in dedicated tray positions rather than loose in a tumbled tray, which protects the blade edges from nicks that could affect patient comfort or retraction consistency.
The full Solid Blade Nasal Approach range — SA-790-19, SA-790-16, SA-790-26, and SA-790-15 in stainless steel, and SA-790-19T, SA-790-16T, SA-790-26T, and SA-790-15T in titanium — is manufactured to surgical-grade tolerances and hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan. Scatter Instruments supplies this range to hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and distributors internationally, with bulk pricing and OEM or private-label branding available on request.
