Barraquer Lid Speculum, Closed Blade, Temporal Approach — Overview

The Barraquer Lid Speculum with a closed blade, temporal approach (SA-792-bs) is the temporal-configuration counterpart to the closed-blade nasal-approach speculum, sharing the same finer 8mm, 9mm, 11mm, and 14mm size graduation and flat, closed solid-blade design, but with the arms angled so the instrument body sits nasally, leaving the temporal quadrant of the orbit clear.

Fine Size Graduation

The 8/9/11/14mm range fills the gap between the coarser size steps of the standard solid-blade speculum, letting the surgeon select a blade width closer to the actual palpebral fissure of the patient rather than rounding to a wider or narrower standard size. This is particularly useful in temporal-incision cataract surgery and oculoplastic procedures where a closer size match improves both patient comfort and the stability of the retraction throughout the case.

Closed Blade, Temporal Configuration

The blade edge is continuous and smooth, without an open hook or notch, minimizing the risk of catching tissue or drape material. With the instrument body positioned nasally, the temporal quadrant is left clear for a second instrument or the surgeon's primary working hand in temporal-incision procedures — a configuration many surgeons prefer for cataract surgery performed via a temporal clear-corneal incision.
