About this instrument

Barraquer Lid Speculum, Closed Rounded Blade, Nasal Approach — Overview

The Barraquer Lid Speculum with a closed rounded blade, nasal approach (SA-790-bs1) sits between the wire-loop and flat solid-blade families: its blades are solid, but rounded and closed in profile rather than flat and open-edged, giving a broader, smoother contact surface against the lid margin than a standard solid blade while retaining more rigidity than a wire loop. It is available in 10mm and 15mm sizes, in stainless steel or titanium.

Why a Rounded, Closed Blade

A rounded blade profile spreads contact pressure over a wider curved surface rather than a thin flat edge, which many surgeons find reduces localized pressure marks on the lid margin during longer procedures, particularly in patients with thinner or more fragile eyelid tissue. “Closed” in this context refers to the blade's smooth, continuous edge — there is no open notch or hook — which lowers the risk of the blade catching on conjunctiva, lash line, or drape material during insertion, repositioning, or removal.

Nasal Approach Configuration

As with the other nasal-approach models in the Barraquer range, the arms are angled so the instrument body sits temporally, keeping the nasal quadrant of the orbit clear for a second instrument, cannula, or the microscope's optical path. This configuration is standard for most routine anterior segment and cataract procedures where the surgeon's working instruments approach primarily from the nasal side.

Sizes and Materials

The 10mm size covers routine adult anterior segment work, while the 15mm size is selected when wider lid exposure is needed, such as in oculoplastic or reconstructive procedures. Stainless steel offers a durable, cost-effective option for general theatre use; titanium offers a lighter, non-magnetic alternative with enhanced long-term corrosion resistance, useful for practices prioritizing instrument longevity or reduced hand fatigue across long lists.

Surgical Use

Insertion follows the standard self-retaining speculum technique: the surgeon retracts the lids, seats the rounded blades just inside the lid margins, and releases so the spring-tensioned arms hold retraction without further assistance. The rounded blade edge is particularly well suited to cases where the lid tissue is expected to be manipulated or re-draped during the procedure, since the smoother contact surface is less likely to create a defined pressure line.

Sterilization and Maintenance

Fully autoclavable in both material options, the instrument should be inspected before each use for blade deformation or loss of spring tension, cleaned promptly after use, and stored to protect the rounded blade edges from nicks that would compromise the smooth contact surface that defines this design.
