About this instrument

Barraquer Lid Speculum, Closed Rounded Blade, Temporal Approach — Overview

The Barraquer Lid Speculum with a closed rounded blade, temporal approach (SA-791-bs) mirrors the nasal-approach rounded-blade speculum in every design respect — solid, rounded, closed-profile blades for broad, smooth contact against the lid margin — but with the arm and blade angle reversed so the instrument body sits nasally, leaving the temporal quadrant of the orbit clear. It is available in 10mm and 15mm sizes, in stainless steel or titanium.

Rounded Blade Design

The rounded, closed blade profile spreads contact pressure over a wider curved surface than a flat solid blade, reducing localized pressure on the lid margin during extended procedures, and eliminates any open edge or notch that could catch tissue or drape material. This makes it a preferred option among surgeons who favor solid-blade rigidity but want a gentler contact profile than a standard flat blade provides.

Temporal Approach Configuration

With the speculum body positioned nasally, the temporal quadrant is left clear for a second instrument, cannula, or the surgeon's primary working hand in temporal-incision procedures. Facilities that perform a mix of nasal- and temporal-incision cataract surgery, or that support multiple surgeons with different technique preferences, commonly stock both approach orientations of the rounded-blade speculum alongside each other.

Sizes and Materials

The 10mm size is suited to routine adult anterior segment procedures; the 15mm size provides wider exposure for oculoplastic or reconstructive work. As with the rest of the range, stainless steel is the durable, cost-effective standard, while titanium offers reduced weight and enhanced corrosion resistance for practices that prioritize those properties.

Surgical Use

Placement follows standard self-retaining speculum technique — lids retracted manually, rounded blades seated just inside the lid margins, arms released to let spring tension maintain exposure. The smooth, rounded contact surface is particularly suited to procedures involving repeated lid manipulation or draping adjustments during the case.

Sterilization and Maintenance

Fully autoclavable in both stainless steel and titanium, the instrument requires the same routine care as other solid-blade Barraquer specula: pre-use inspection for blade deformation or tension loss, prompt post-case cleaning, and protective tray storage to preserve the rounded blade edge.
