Reversible Nasal/Temporal Configuration

Rather than stocking separate nasal-approach and temporal-approach versions, as is standard with most Barraquer-family specula, the Chu design can be reversed on the eye to suit either surgical approach. This reduces the number of distinct speculum variants a facility needs to stock while still giving the surgeon the correct body clearance — nasal or temporal — for the specific incision and instrument approach used in a given case.

Aspirating Function

The aspirating feature is the more distinguishing element of this design: irrigation fluid, blood, or debris that accumulates in the palpebral fissure during surgery can be drawn off through channels integrated into the blades, connected to a standard suction line. This keeps the surgical field clearer without requiring a separate suction cannula to be introduced and repositioned throughout the case, which is particularly useful in procedures with significant irrigation, such as phacoemulsification, where fluid management directly affects visualization.

Blade Size

The blades are a fixed 15mm solid size, suited to general adult anterior segment surgery where the surgeon wants both the wider exposure of a 15mm blade and the aspirating capability, rather than needing a separate suction instrument in the field.
