About this instrument

Floyd-Barraquer Lid Speculum with Lifting Wings, Nasal Approach — Overview

The Floyd-Barraquer Lid Speculum (SA-790-80) is a modification of the classic Barraquer self-retaining eyelid retractor, distinguished by small “lifting wings” built into the blade arms. These wings give the surgeon an additional, more elevated point of purchase for lifting and repositioning the speculum during a procedure, without having to grasp the spring body itself — a refinement attributed to the Floyd modification of the original Barraquer design and widely used in anterior segment surgery where the retractor may need fine mid-procedure repositioning.

What the Lifting Wings Do

On a standard Barraquer speculum, adjusting the retraction mid-case usually means regrasping the spring body or arms directly, which can momentarily disturb the exposure or require the surgeon to shift their instrument grip. The lifting wings on this variant provide small raised tabs at a convenient point on the arms, giving a secure grip for lifting, tilting, or slightly repositioning the speculum without needing to release and re-seat the entire instrument. This is particularly useful during procedures where the surgical field needs to be adjusted incrementally — for example, rotating exposure slightly to bring a different part of the limbus into better view.

Nasal Approach Configuration

Like the other nasal-approach instruments in the Barraquer family, the arms are angled to keep the instrument body toward the temporal side, leaving the nasal quadrant clear for a second instrument or cannula — the standard configuration for most anterior segment and cataract procedures.

Design and Construction

The core mechanism remains the familiar spring-tensioned, self-retaining Barraquer design: the surgeon retracts the lids, seats the blades just inside the lid margins, and releases so the arms hold exposure without assistance. The wings are an addition to the arm geometry rather than a change to the blade or spring mechanism, so the retraction characteristics and blade contact remain consistent with standard Barraquer specula, while gaining the added convenience of the lifting feature.

Clinical Use

This instrument is used across general anterior segment and cataract surgery, and is particularly favored by surgeons who frequently make small mid-procedure adjustments to lid exposure and prefer a dedicated grip point over regrasping the arms directly. It is a single, general-purpose size intended for standard adult use.

Sterilization and Care

Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel and hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan, the instrument is fully autoclavable and intended for repeated reuse. Because the lifting wings are a fine feature of the arm geometry, care should be taken during cleaning and tray storage not to bend or flatten them, which would reduce their usefulness as a grip point.
