Barraquer Infant Lid Speculum Closed Wire Blade
$12.00

The Grandon-Barraquer Wire Speculum (S1-500-11) is a wire-blade eyelid retractor built on the Barraquer self-retaining spring principle, distinguished by small notches machined into the wire blades that allow a suture to be looped through and anchored to the speculum itself. This Grandon modification is used when the surgeon wants to secure a traction or bridle suture directly to the retractor rather than to a separate fixation point, simplifying the setup for procedures that require both lid retraction and an additional point of globe or tissue fixation.
In certain anterior segment and strabismus procedures, the surgeon places a traction suture (commonly a superior rectus bridle suture) to help rotate or stabilize the globe during the case. Rather than clamping that suture to the surgical drape or a separate hemostat, the notches on this speculum's wire blades give a dedicated, stable anchor point directly on an instrument that is already fixed in place by its own spring tension. This keeps the traction suture close to the surgical field, reduces the number of separate points being managed on the drape, and keeps tension on the suture more consistent throughout the procedure since it's anchored to an instrument that isn't being repositioned.
The blades themselves are wire loops, following the same rationale as other wire-blade Barraquer variants: a rounded, low-mass contact surface that's gentler on lid tissue than a flat solid blade, appropriate for procedures where the surgeon wants both a secure retraction and a lower risk of localized pressure marking, particularly during longer cases.
This speculum is used in cataract surgery, strabismus surgery, and other anterior segment procedures where a bridle or traction suture is part of the standard technique. It gives surgeons who routinely use a superior rectus bridle suture, or similar fixation technique, a way to integrate that step directly into the retraction setup rather than treating it as a separate instrument step.
Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel and hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan, the instrument follows the same corrosion-resistant finish and calibrated spring tension standard as the rest of the Barraquer range, with the notch feature added to the wire blade without altering the fundamental retraction mechanism.
Fully autoclavable and intended for repeated reuse, the instrument should be inspected before each use for wire deformation, notch wear, or reduced spring tension, and cleaned promptly after use to prevent debris buildup in the notches themselves, which are a finer feature than the rest of the instrument and more prone to residue accumulation if not cleaned carefully.
The Grandon-Barraquer Wire Speculum with Suture Notches, SKU S1-500-11, is supplied by Scatter Instruments to hospitals, surgery centers, and distributors internationally, with bulk pricing and OEM or private-label branding available on request.
