Knapp Lid Speculum, Open Wire Blade, Nasal Approach — Overview

The Knapp Lid Speculum (SA-790-56) is a self-retaining eyelid retractor with a 13mm open wire blade and a 60mm blade spread, giving substantially wider exposure than most standard-size specula while keeping the low-pressure contact of a wire, rather than solid, blade design.

Why a 60mm Spread

Most general-purpose specula have a blade spread well under 60mm; a wider spread like this gives the surgeon more working room around the lid margins, useful in procedures where instrument traffic in and out of the surgical field is frequent, or where wider visualization of the ocular surface and surrounding tissue is needed. The trade-off of a wider spread is more tension on the lids, so this design is typically chosen deliberately for cases that specifically benefit from that extra room rather than as a default general-purpose speculum.

Open Wire Blade

The 13mm blade is an open, rather than closed, wire design, which some surgeons prefer for how it seats against the lid margin, understanding that an open blade end requires careful, deliberate placement to avoid catching tissue — standard practice for any open-blade wire instrument.

Clinical Use

This speculum is used in anterior segment and cataract procedures where the surgeon specifically wants wide exposure with the gentler contact profile of a wire blade, and who is experienced with open-blade wire retraction technique.

Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel and hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan, with spring tension calibrated to reliably hold the wider 60mm spread without excessive lid tension.

Sterilization and Care

Fully autoclavable. The open wire end should be checked for burrs or deformation before each use, alongside standard checks for arm alignment and spring tension.
