About this instrument

Kratz-Barraquer Lid Wire Speculum with Wings, Nasal Approach — Overview

The Kratz-Barraquer Lid Wire Speculum with Wings (SA-790-33) combines the Kratz arm modification with lifting wings similar to those found on the Floyd-Barraquer speculum, giving surgeons both the Kratz wire-blade handling characteristics and a dedicated grip point for mid-procedure repositioning, in an adult, nasal-approach configuration.

Kratz Geometry with Wings

Where the standard Kratz-Barraquer speculum offers the modified arm curvature alone, this version adds small lifting wings to the arms, letting the surgeon lift, tilt, or slightly reposition the speculum during a procedure without regrasping the spring body directly. Combining both refinements in one instrument suits surgeons who specifically prefer the Kratz feel and also want the convenience of a dedicated repositioning grip — rather than having to choose between the two features across separate instruments.

Wire Blade Design

The blades are wire loops, offering a rounded, lower-pressure contact surface against the lid margin compared with a solid blade, which many surgeons prefer for routine anterior segment and cataract procedures where a gentler retraction profile is desired without sacrificing the stability of a self-retaining spring mechanism.

Nasal Approach Configuration

The arms are angled so the instrument body sits temporally, keeping the nasal quadrant clear for a second instrument or cannula, matching the standard configuration used in most routine cataract and anterior segment surgery.

Clinical Use

This speculum is used in general adult anterior segment and cataract surgery, particularly by surgeons who have trained with or specifically prefer the Kratz wire-blade profile and who also value the lifting-wing feature for fine intraoperative adjustments to lid exposure.

Material and Construction

Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel and hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan, to the same corrosion-resistant, calibrated-tension standard as the rest of the Barraquer range, with both the Kratz arm profile and the wing feature integrated into the base design rather than added as a separate attachment.

Sterilization and Care

Fully autoclavable and intended for repeated reuse. As with the Floyd-Barraquer wing design, care should be taken during cleaning and storage to avoid bending or flattening the wings, which would reduce their usefulness as a grip point, and the wire blades should be checked before each use for deformation or reduced spring tension.
