Why an Asymmetric Blade Pairing

Some surgeons prefer different retraction characteristics on the upper versus lower lid — for example, a firmer, more stable solid blade against the upper lid, which typically requires more consistent counter-tension, paired with a gentler open wire blade against the lower lid, where tissue is often thinner and a lower-pressure contact is preferred. This asymmetric design gives that combination in a single instrument rather than requiring the surgeon to choose one blade type uniformly across both arms, which is the standard configuration on most Barraquer specula.
