McPherson Lid Speculum, Free-Swinging Solid Blade, With Suture Post — Overview

The McPherson Lid Speculum (SA-790-67) is a nasal-approach eyelid retractor with a free-swinging solid blade mechanism, an 8.25cm overall length, a 30mm blade spread, and an integrated suture post for traction or bridle suture fixation.

Free-Swinging Blade Mechanism

Unlike a rigidly fixed blade arm, the free-swinging design allows the blade to pivot somewhat independently of the arm, letting it self-adjust slightly to follow the natural contour of the lid margin as the eye or lid shifts during the procedure, rather than holding a single fixed angle that might not stay perfectly seated throughout. This can improve consistency of contact over the course of a longer procedure compared with a rigid blade mount.

Suture Post

The integrated suture post gives the surgeon a dedicated anchor point for a traction or bridle suture directly on the speculum, similar in purpose to the Grandon-Barraquer notches and Guyton-Park suture posts elsewhere in this range, keeping suture fixation close to the surgical field without a separate clamp point.

Clinical Use

This speculum is used in cataract, anterior segment, and strabismus surgery where the surgeon uses a bridle or traction suture as part of the technique, and where the free-swinging blade's self-adjusting contact is valued.

Material and Construction

Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel and hand-finished in Sialkot, Pakistan, with the free-swinging blade pivot and suture post integrated into the frame.

Sterilization and Care

Fully autoclavable. The free-swinging pivot mechanism should be checked for smooth operation and the suture post for wear before each use.
