Josephberg Besser Single Ended Scleral Depressor Overview

A single ended scleral depressor with one curved Josephberg Besser tip on a short 10.5cm flat handle. Its designers describe the curved blade as shaped to conform to the globe, and this single tip version as similar to the thimble type Schepens depressor. The name is also written Josephberg-Besser.

How It Compares

Choose the single ended version when you want only the curved tip, on a compact handle. The Josephberg Besser double ended adds a second end. The Schepens is the thimble design worn on the finger.

Clinical Use

Scleral depression during indirect ophthalmoscopy, retinal examination and retinal surgery, pressing gently on the sclera through the lid to bring the peripheral retina into view.

Material and Construction

Surgical grade stainless steel, hand finished in Sialkot, Pakistan, with a smooth, atraumatic tip.

Sterilization and Care

Supplied non-sterile. Clean and sterilize it before first use. It is fully autoclavable and made for repeated use. Rinse it straight after use, clean it with a neutral pH detergent, and never use saline or abrasive cleaners. Inspect the tip before each use: it must be smooth, with no burr or scratch.
